  1. Some argue on when a man becomes a man. It’s straightforward. When you have your own box of decent cables, adapters, and wires, such as VGA converters and possibly a 3.5mm splitter.

  2. Get a label maker and put a label on any new anonymous power supply you get to remind yourself what it goes with. Have faith in me. It’s a life-changing experience.

  3. This is my name. I’ve saved every single one of them.

I reorganized them recently by voltage and amps. They’ve come in handy, but there’s no way I’d hand over my mess to my kid. Start your own set, if you’re a child.

  4. Still looking for the One Universal AC Adapter that can power anything. Before then, I only have three boxes of miscellaneous adapters to scavenge through.

  5. Worst of all, you just *know* that the one you take to the e-waste recycler event is the one you’ll need next week, and you’ll have to buy a new one, which will be obsolete by the time you get it.

  6. Oh my god! My new baby’s bouncer is powered by three C batteries and only lasts a few days!?! AND IT DOESN’T NEED TO BE PLUGGED IN!?!

Fuck it, I found a box of adaptors from the early 1990s. A 4.5-5v 750mA adapter has to be one of them.

  7. Is it just me who keeps the majority of those ranked by Voltage and Amperage on hand?

Almost all of them have a two-wire end that can be repurposed for other connectors or uses.

    I’m a sucker for the 3 amp 12 volt ones…

  8. You might laugh, but when my router seemed to stop working, it was the old box of adapters that got me back on the internet. The one time persuaded me that it is needed.

  9. Now that all happily runs on 5v USB, I’ve found that these days are drawing to a close. I don’t have to hunt down mysterious 6v, 9v, 15v, or 24v power adapters and solder new connectors on them anymore.

  10. This is my name. I’ve saved every single one of them.

I reorganized them recently by voltage and amps. They’re useful, but there’s no way I’d hand over my mess to my kid. Start a set of your own, son.

  11. After Dad died, my brother and I discovered an entire clothes hamper full of tubes, adapters, television, and networking cables. It wasn’t a little hamper, either.

And a broken printer that I swear I threw away ten years ago. What was he thinking when he pulled that out of the trash?

  12. It’s quicker, faster, and less expensive to replace a broken one with a spare on hand than it is to try to restore one or wait for a replacement to be delivered after discovering the one person selling it for 4000 percent MSRP on EBAY.

Only make sure it’s a compatible spare, or things could get a lot more expensive.

  13. There’s nothing like pulling out that VGA video cable you need for that old monitor you still have for that old laptop you hung onto because you still have that one gadget that requires a serial port to change a setting, only to discover the other end is actually a 3 inch parallel printer connector in a box of tangled cables.

  14. I despise the fact that there’s no way to get this many without using duplicate connectors! There should only be ONE connector that controls everything!

    )

  15. Pro tip: When I first get them, I use metallic silver sharpies to write on them what equipment they are for, because most don’t tell.

This is why the European Union is attempting to ban proprietary chargers in favor of USB, and China has already done so for tablets.

  16. Some people disagree on when a man becomes a man. It’s easy to understand. When you have a box full of good cables, adapters, and wires, such as VGA converters and probably a 3.5mm splitter.

  17. Still on the lookout for the One Universal AC Adapter that can charge anything. I just have three boxes of miscellaneous adapters to scavenge through until then.

  18. If an adapter’s output connector is strange, cut it off and solder on a connector that you prefer.

“Screw terminal to barrel adapters” may also be used –

  19. My workplace’s IT department has a large bin of old adapters that have come in handy many times.

I even make test jigs that run on old 19V laptop adapters. Remove the connector and replace it with a two-piece terminal block plug. It saves me from having to find a separate power supply, and if one fails, I just grab another one from the bin.
